Request for Red Grouse Information

As part of the Blaenafon World Heritage Site ' Forgotten Landscapes ' project, Chris Hatch is looking at the population and distribution of Red Grouse in the area.
He is particularly interested in receiving information on any sightings over the last 12 months or so in the Blorenge, Mynydd Garn Clochdy, Coity mountain, Mynydd Farteg Fawr and  Mynydd James areas, together with sightings from adjacent areas e.g. Brynmawr, Llanelli Hill, Garn yr Erw, Garn Wen, Waun Wen, Mynydd Llanhilleth etc..
Any information can be e-mailed to Chris at redgrouse@gwentbirds.org.uk

Wader Predation at Newport Wetlands Reserve

 We have received a request from the Reserve for help. The breeding wader populations at Newport Wetlands are subject to predation from a number of predators at different times of the day and at different stages during their breeding cycles. To help gain a better understanding of the pressures that local waders are subject to, the Reserve management team has asked if during the course of your normal bird watching activity you could record predators’ present, time, date and location. Where wader predation is witnessed please record wader and predator species together with time, date and location.  Any other similar records relating to recent past years would also be helpful.

Please send all records to the County Recorder (Chris Jones)

Avian Flu

We have received the following advice from Julian Branscombe, Manager, Gwent Wildlife Trust, in the event that you find a dead bird:
 'There is a possibility that wildfowl may be affected by the highly pathogenic form of the H5N1 strain of avian influenza in the Wales over the coming weeks.  If you come across any suspicious die-off of wildfowl or for that matter any other wild birds please:
* Do not touch them.
* Contact Defra on 08459 335577 immediately.'
 If you have any questions please contact me in the first instance, Trevor Russell, 01600 716266 or e-mail trevor.russell7@virgin.net
