Illegal bird
trapping
Of great concern
is news that there has been Illegal bird trapping taking place
at the Newport Wetlands this week, which has resulted in the
death of at least one wild bird – a Reed Bunting. The
bird had became entangled in an abandoned mist net and was
therefore unable to escape. We believe that this illegal
activity is aimed at catching finches, which are then sold on
for commercial gain. The person(s) doing this are obviously not
licensed by the authorities and their activities do not form
part of any legitimate bird trapping scheme such as the
national bird-ringing programme overseen by the British Trust
for Ornithology. Legitimate bird ringers (such as the
members of the Goldcliff Ringing Group) are always happy to
answer questions about their activities. If however you see
someone trapping birds and are suspicious as to whether the
activity is legal or not then please raise the alarm with the
Gwent Police. The Wildlife Liaison Officer for Newport is PC
682 Tony
Williams. He can be contacted on Tel: 01633 244999. If you
witness such activity at the Newport Wetlands you might also
like to contact the CCW – Kevin Dupe, Reserve Manager
