An Introduction

The Group was established in 1994 in response to the need to co-ordinate bird ringing activities in the southern part of the former county of Gwent. Our aim is to study birds through ringing activities and to record and publish details of our activities in an annual report.
We are registered with the British Trust for Ornithology and operates in strict compliance with the rules set out by that body. All our members are fully trained in catching and handling birds and are licensed to do so under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.
Ringing by the Group is carried out in the Newport area, principally at the reedbeds at the Newport Wetlands Reserve. Details of the Group’s activities can be found in our annual report.
The continued support of the Group by the Gwent Ornithological Society is greatly appreciated.
