Goytre House Wood

Main Sighting:
John Davies 28/6/02 Goytre Woods. A lazy afternoon spent in Goytre woods. Several species observed with young broods. Spotted Flycatcher, Song Thrush, Tree Creeper, and Nuthatch all with young. Great spotted woodpecker, Blackcap, Chiff chaff, Garden Warbler, and Redstart observed along canal footpath. Good to see the construction completed of the wood boundary fence. Excellent job. No sign of Pied Flycatcher, but im sure that other GOS members would have more success. A single Common spotted orchid found inside the wood boundary, near the canal. One of the most enjoyable local birding excursions this year.

A kite was seen over Rogerstone today .I am pretty sure it was a black kite again .It appeared smaller and more compact than red kite .The tail again was only shallowly forked.Unfortunately I was chasing it whilst on a push bike and only saw it from behind - as I was in a cul-de sac I eventually ran out of road.It was heading south towards Pye Corner along the Risca by-pass.
