GLWR Uskmouth

Main Sighting:
Visited Uskmouth to catch the high tide of 24.2.03, and then walked over the levels via the foot paths to the Farmers Arms, Goldcliff. Fortunately the mist lifted quickly giving good visibility, of just over 50 different species. At Uskmouth birds included 1 female Merlin, 63 Coot, 5 Water Rail, 46 Tufted Duck, 33 Meadow Pipit, 7 (Singing) Cetti'ss Warbler, 2 Stonechat, 14 Reed Bunting, and on the foreshore 78 Shelduck, 62 Mallard,21 Teal, 134 Wigeon, 19 Pintail, 20 Grey Plover, 4 Oystercatchers, 100 Knot, 68 Curlew, 2900 Dunlin, and good views of a single Ruff. On the Levels 1 Little Grebe, 6 Little Egret, 14 Mallard, 1 Teal, 2 Pintail, 3 Shoveler, 2 Tufted Duck, 1 Buzzard, 13 Coot, 23 Curlew, 2 (Singing) Cetti'ssWarbler, 2 Redwing, 2 Mistle Thrush, and 75 House Sparrows between the Levels, and farmers Arms.

Peterstone Gout

Main Sighting:
Mon 24th Feb - Peterstone Goutat high tide. Water Pipit by small pools just over the stile, then moved c.50 m west. Well marked bird with long pale buff malar stripe, whitish supercilium, white outer tail feathers. Also 3 Little Egret there. Dunlin - 2000 Knot - 100 Grey Plover - 100 Teal - 100 Pintail - 1 pair Wigeon - 1 pair Shelduck - 50 Redshank - 100

23/2/03 Peterstone Gout 1530-1630: Several 100 Dunlin. 100+ Knot, Redshank. 6+ Grey Plover. Several Curlew, Teal, Wigeon, Shelduck, Mallard. 1 Bar Tailed Godwit, 1 Golden Plover.

Gwent

Main Sighting:
19th Feb. Visited St. Brides Wentlooge. Tide was just on the turn- going out. Saw 1 greater black back gull; 1 redshank; 8 turnstone; 1 oystercatcher; 3 ring plover and 50 dunlin. Then went on to Gwent Levels reserve. Tide was well out by then. Waders too far to identify. Did see 3 little egret; 2 raven; 8 reed bunting; 5 goldfinch and 1 bittern;( it flew from 1 reedbed to the next- Never having seen one I was a little overcome and my mind is still trying to come up with reaons why it must have been something else)

Abergavenny

Main Sighting:
18 February A male Wigeon seen by the Sand Martin bank at the Castle Meadows, Abergavenny, is an unusual bird for this site. A Kingfisher makes daily appearances, while Goosander and Mallard numbers continue to increase.

The Blorenge

Main Sighting:
Walked the Blorenge from Fox Hunter'ss Grave, to the north escarpment, and back over the mountain to Keepers Pond. A Red Grouse put up just above Keepers Pond. Also seen 10 Meadow Pipits, 2 Carrion Crow, 3 Ravens, and a Peregrine at The Tumble.
