Ynysyfro Reservoir

Main Sighting:
Mon 20th Jan Adult Kittiwake at Ynys y Fro reservoirs. On the bank or path running around the left side of the lower res. bewteen 12:30 and 13:00 at least. Was visible from the car park when I arrived, but did go round into the invisible left arm too. Not a rarity but a year tick for many I would guess, and also unusual for the location. Also present: 18 Pochard, 26 Tufties, 1, poss 2 drake Shoveler, 6 Cormorant, 5 Little Grebe, 1 male Sparrowhawk. John

GLWR Uskmouth

Main Sighting:
Visited Uskmouth NR this afternoon and saw at least 4 Short-eared Owls at the east end of the reserve and a Merlin folowing the shoreline of the estuary low heading west, heard a Cetti'ss Warbler singing near the car park.

At least 4 Redshank and several un-identified 'speeps's on Usk'ss banks alongside Newport Bridge. Mistle Thrush resting on roof opposite Indoor market. Grey Wagtail on roof of CAB

GLWR Uskmouth

Main Sighting:
Saturday 8th - calm cold sunshine. Private coastal site near Newport, 1 Common Sandpipier and a second distant bird with very distinct short tail could not be confirmed to species level ! Also Green Sandpiper, 3 Chiffchaffs, 10 G.C.Grebe and over 100 Tufted Duck. Uskmouth Reserve had 2 immature Scaup, Short-eared Owl giving excellent views quartering area, Chetti'ss singing, and possible Bearded Tit heard. Large Chaffinch, Greenfinch + flock on shore near lighthouse - may be many 100'ss strong, but awkward views in dense spartina grass, precluded seeing previously reported Brambling.

Llandegfedd Reservoir

Main Sighting:
Llandegfedd Reservoir today. G.N.Diver well hidden from dam end at 2pm, but showed towards dusk as it move out to centre of Res. for evening. Two - Michahellis - Yellow-legged Gulls loafing together at 2.30 between Bert Hamar Hide (NW shore) and north car park, stayed to roost amonst some 300 LB-b Gulls and a handful of Herring. Much greater numbers of Herring Gulls arrived after 4pm in very poor light. NO Med. or GB-b Gulls seen. At least 20 Goosander in NE corner by 4.15pm with some 250-300 Lapwing in almost constant flight. NOTE: North Car park is locked for the season but room to park on grassy side of road (keep two wheels on the tarmac)just outside gate.
