Hafod Farm, Brynmawr

Main Sighting: Sparrowhawk
Had the same experience as Simon Bedford this morning - a Sparrowhawk flying along the lane directly in front of the car, no more than two feet off the ground. Continued for over a hundred yards before veering off.

Peterstone Gout

Main Sighting: Juvenile Swans
Duck numbers low today: 86 Pintail,18 Shoveler,16 Teal,c.20 Wigeon. Redshank 310, Dunlin 500- 600, Oyster Catcher 70, Turnstone 2, Heron 2, Lgrt. 1, Kestrel, 2 Mute Swans. 6 juvenile swans came towards the Gout pool and flew around the area twice and then off towards the trout farm. Wing pattern grey and white, black bills, no wing noise, subdued yapping chatter.

Punchbowl area of Blorenge

Main Sighting: Fieldfare
over 300 strong flock of Redwing and Fieldfare feeding on Hawthorn and Holly on the llanfoist Road . Also male sparrowhawk doing the flying in front of a vehicle thing. A tactic they use as the vehicle flushes birds out. Also at least 2 Brambling with 39 Chaffinch on the same road on beechmast. 700+ Woodpigeon same location.

Newport Wetlands Goldcliff

Main Sighting: Short eared Owl
Short-eared Owl great view from the Marsh VP. The high tide count included Spotted Redshank 1(2) Snipe 30 Ringed Plover 8 Grey Plover 10 Curlew 30 Teal 50 Shoveler 50. Also Red Kite Marsh Harrier male Buzzard 6 Kestrel 2. Red Admiral 3 and a Hawker Dragonfly which escaped ID.
