Abergavenny

Main Sighting:
Saturday, March 9th During the Gos walk led by Tim Griffiths, we sighted a diver sp. in the middle of the resevoir, as we scanned from the fisherman'ss hut. It re- appeared close to the fish tanks and gave better views. The consensus was that it was a Black-throated Diver. Other sightings included 1 Tree Sparrow, a small flock of Redpolls and atleast 6 Snipe. Sunday, March 10th Our first Chiffchaff of the year, heard by myself, John Davies and Rob Moeller at the Castle Meadows, Abergavenny this morning.

Gobion

Main Sighting:
Gobion 2nd March 2002 A morning visit to Gobion with Steve Butler starting from the Bryn produced the following sightings: 1 Little Egret, 4 Green Sandpipers, 2 Greater Black-backed Gulls, 5 Goosanders (2 male, 3 female)and 3 Little Grebes as well as good numbers of the more common species found at this site.Gobion 2nd March 2002 A morning visit to Gobion with Steve Butler starting from the Bryn produced the following sightings: 1 Little Egret, 4 Green Sandpipers, 2 Greater Black-backed Gulls, 5 Goosanders (2 male, 3 female)and 3 Little Grebes as well as good numbers of the more common species found at this site.

GLWR Uskmouth

Main Sighting:
01/03/2002 Uskmouth a.m. VERY cold wind blowing 2 Short-eared owls 2 Little Egrets 2 Kestrels 3 Singing Cettis Warblers 02/03/2002 Uskmouth a.m. -p.m. 3 Short-eared owls 1 Little Egret 2 Kestrels 6 singing Cettis Warbler(one seen briefly) 6 Common Snipe Single female Goldeneye No sighting of Hen Harrier either day.

GLWR Uskmouth

Main Sighting:
21/02/2002 2 Short-eared Owls at Uskmouth this morning + 3 Cetti'ss Warblers heard singing. No sign of the Hen Harrier. 1 Little Egret at Gobion at midday.

GLWR Uskmouth

Main Sighting:
Visited Llandegfydd Reservoir @ 10:00 am and saw the Black-throated Diver at the north end of the reservior, also approx. 12 Great Crested Grebes present. Visited Uskmouth @ 2:00 pm and saw at least 3 Short-eared Owls, 1 ring- tail Hen Harrier, a pair of Goosander on the estuary, a flock of approx. 20 Siskins flying north, an adult Whooper Swan of unknown origin, at least 2 singing Cetti'ss warblers, at least 3 Water Rails calling and a pair of Ravens displaying overhead.

Abergavenny

Main Sighting:
Sightings in the Abergavenny area this week: 15/02/2002 1 Little Egret, 4 Green Sandpipers, 2 Snipe and 17 Mute Swans at Gobion (Rob Moeller) 1 Ruff and 4 Golden Plovers with Lapwing flock in flooded fields near Llanellen (John Davies)

Goytre Wood

Main Sighting:
Saturday, February 9th 36 nest boxes have been put up this morning at the GOS reserve at Goytre wood by Alan Williams, Tim Griffiths, Steve Butler, John Davies, Tony White and myself. A quick visit to Llandegffed reservoir afterwards produced spectacular views of a hunting juvenile Peregrine. The Black-throated Diver was showing quite well, despite the choppy conditions, in the vicinity of the fish farm.

Peterstone Gout

Main Sighting:
Tues 6th Feb - Peterstone Gout - 12:30 - 13:30 high tide No waders or gulls at all!! 1 fem Merlin sitting on a tussock of spartina until it was surrounded by water. 250 Teal and a few Shoveler -&- Pintail and 2 Wigeon. Very quiet.
