Fire Damage at Goldcliff Lagoons Reserve

Dear Members and Readers.
The society is obviously devastated at the damage to what many would say is one of Gwent’s finest nature reserves.
Many of our members visit it on a weekly, if not daily basis, and the society will be very keen to understand what plans the NRW have next to restore the reserve once they have assessed the damage.
NRW have released a statement concerning the fire on Facebook.
Please see below the NRW statement –
A recent fire has sadly destroyed one of the bird hides at Goldcliff Lagoons, Newport.
It’s also caused damage to the viewing platforms and the new anti-predator fence, which was recently installed.
Work to repair the damage and clean up the site is scheduled to begin early next week, and our officers are exploring options to replace the bird hide.
The viewing platforms are still available to use, but if you’re visiting the area, please take extra care and make sure you follow any signage and barriers which are in place for your safety.
If you spot a fire, get to a safe place, call 999 and ask for the Fire and Rescue Service.
📞 If you need to report an environmental or pollution incident, please contact our 24/7 incident communications centre via our online report it form. You can also contact us 24/7 on 0300 065 3000.
