Ringing

Ringing provides important information for bird conservation on such aspects as movements, survival rates, longevity, migration and breeding success. Many ringers are active throughout Gwent and summaries of their year’s work are given in the Ringing Report published in our Annual Bird Report.

Most ringers operate individually but currently there are two ringing groups in the county: the Goldcliff Ringing Group (GRG) operates at various sites around Newport and the Llancillo Ringing Group works with a nest-box colony near Abergavenny. Several Gwent ringers are also members of the Llangorse Ringing Group near Brecon.

There are relatively few Gwent ringers who are able to train others (and they may already be fully committed), but if you’d like to start training (it can involve a big time commitment over several years), available trainers can be found via the BTO website.
