Garnlydan Reservoir

Main Sighting: Whinchat
A lovely afternoon but quiet on the moor. A group of six Whinchats hawking from a fence below the reservoir, counts of two Stonechats and five Wheatears. A single adult Black-headed Gull on the water along with the usual large gulls.

Blorenge

Main Sighting: Red Grouse
Over 40 individuals counted this morning between 6.30am and 7.30am largely feeding on Heather flowers/shoots along with Wimberries.Proof that moorlands need not be intensively managed such as the moors of Northern England to sustain a healthy population of Grouse.

Our first visit to the reserve for five weeks- nice to be back. Whinchat 1 Sedge Warbler 1 Yellow wagtail 2 Swallow 40 House Martin 20 Sand Martin 1 Little Stint 1 Curlew Sandpiper 4 Little Ringed Plover 2 Knot 25 Spotted Redshank 2 Greenshank 1 Black-tailed Godwit 150 Ruff 1 Dunlin 2 Redshank 55 Also several Migrant Hawkers and a Southern Hawker.

Peterstone Gout

Main Sighting: Pied Flycatcher
Decent arrival of migrants Inc. 1 pied fly, 3 spotted fly, 5 wheatear, many chiffchaff, lesser numbers of willow warbler and a few wedge warbler. Overhead light passage of tree pipits, grey wagtails and swallows. Two eastbound cranes were exciting.

Llanellen River Usk

Main Sighting: Green Sandpiper
Walk downstream from Llanellen bridge. Overall rather quiet; highlights: two Green Sandpipers, three Spotted Flycatchers, 10 Chiffchalls including one singing; flock of 53 Lesser BB Gulls and four Grey Herons in a meadow.

Goldcliff Lagoons

Main Sighting: Spotted redshank
Big migration movements today including 400+ swallows and 1000+ house martins (1 sand martin also), 2 whinchat, skylark, kestrel and green woodpecker calling. Elsewhere, 1 common whitethroat, 2 chiffchaff, 6 greenshank, 54 lapwing, 2 curlew (66 more on mudflats), 68 teal, 11 yellow wagtails and 6 white wagtails along the sea wall, 10 little egrets, 26 knot, high count of 236 black tailed godwits with the majority being juvenile birds, 39 ringed plovers, 1 juv little ringed plover, flock of 30+ linnets, 66 sheclduck (mudflats), 2 reeves and usual male ruff, 1 spoyyed redshank, 5 curlew sandpipers (juvs and 1 possible adult), 56 redshanks, 2 wheatears, 2 avocets, 3 snipe and a cracking little stint in with 124 dunlin. Southern hawker and small tortoiseshell also seen.
