Lliswerry

Main Sighting: golden plover
Love walking dog at night,,all is peaceful exept for a golden plover calling low overhead,,heading towards the coast just after midnight...my lliswerry wader list keeps growing!!

Peterstone Gout

Main Sighting: Wheatear
1630 - 1800; either side of high tide. Vismig continuing with Swallow, Meadow Pipit, Skylark, Grey Wagtail all moving east. Wheatear (2), Yellow Wagtail (1), Kingfisher (1), Stonechat (1), Sedge Warbler (1) with good numbers of Chiffchaff and Blackcap. Greenshank (1) roosting at high tide with Redshank, also Black-tailed Godwit (1).

Goldcliff

Main Sighting: Hobby
Hobby hawking over lagoons in front of far hide at 1230. Only around for a minute and then disappeared over sea wall. Counted a103 Avocet on shore. Lots of migrating wheatear and swallows. Single little stint and golden plover plus spotted redshank, single ruff, two Dunlin and lots of redshank and greenshanks seen from new platform. Flock of 50 grey lag geese and lots of wigeon, Canada geese, teal, gadwall and shoveler

Peterstone Gout

Main Sighting: jay
Influx of jays reached Gwent today with at least 4 heading NE and a further 4 in the hedges. 3h of vis mig totalled c1600 birds including red kite (3), great-spotted woodpecker (1 high-flying bird heading NE) skylark (119), meadow pipit (1150), linnet (184) alba wagtails (50), goldfinch (55) and the first trickle of chaffinch (8). Hirundines greatly reduced today with only swallow (216), house martin (51) and sand martin (13). Also present one yellow wag, 2 wheatears and a greenshank.

Peterstone Gout

Main Sighting: Vis mig count
10,100 birds in 3h count. Highlights.- meadow pipit (5240), swallow (2540) house martin (880), sand martin (56), unidentified hirundines (1115), linnet (179), alba wagtail (49), grey wagtail (18), skylark (26), reed bunting (2). Plenty of chiffs in the scrub and also robins + some beautifully marked lesser whitethroats.

Goldcliff Lagoons

Main Sighting: Harriers
Female marsh harrier present upon arrival (0800) sat on the grass opposite the first hide, moved off at 0845 and returned at 1040. Second marsh harrier appeared beyond the sea wall (opposite hide 1) at 0850 but moved off towards the NWR. Female kestrel present, 1 buzzard and a female sparrowhawk. Hide 1: 4 mute swans, 72 greylag geese, 162 wigeon, 2 black tailed godwits and 8 ringed plovers flying/calling. Platforms: 8 greenshanks, 44 lapwing, 22 common redshanks, 18 shoveler, 72 teal, 8 gadwall and 2 little stints. Mudflats: 82 avocet, 10 oystercatchers, 38 curlew, 2 gt black-backed gulls and 3 shelduck. Hide 3: Pair of ruff, 8 coot, 4 common snipe feeding in the open and 2 little egrets. Massive movement of swallows all morning, numbers well into the thousands. House martins mixed in and 120 migrating meadow pipits in a group with 5 skylarks also (1030-1040hrs).

Newport Wetlands Goldcliff

Main Sighting: Little Stint
Little Stint 1 (another was reported) Spotted Redshank 1 Ruff 2 Wigeon 64 Gadwall 8 Raven 4 Chiffchaff. On Monday morning work will take place to erect screening on the new VP. Birds on the near edge of the lagoon have been disturbed, and it is hoped that the screening will help prevent this.
