Newport Wetlands Uskmouth

Main Sighting: Merlin
Wednesday morning about 8am about 500 lapwing were flying above the Uskmouth hide which then flew towards the mudflats. At this point I saw a merlin flying east very close to the ground that landed on one of the wooden posts in the mud until it was bullied off by a crow.

Llandegfedd Reservoir

Main Sighting: 54 Canada Geese
54 Canada Geese on North shore then flew to Dam 10 Tufted duck ( still lessening) 16 Mallard 4 Teal 2 Pochard ( Few and far between this winter ) 4 Great Crested Grebe ad. 6 Juv Great Crested Grebe 4 Cormorants LBBGull GBBGULL both on Dam wall nr Layby no doubt feeding on the masses of rubbish dumped over the wall onto Dam from late night cars. ( mainly McDonalds. Water levels are rising due to pumping flooding Green Poll in time for breeding season.

Waxwings reported in Cwmbran today on Birdguides. Maybe the flick of about 12 I saw fly over the A4042 yesterday. Landed in trees in the housing estate.

Penrhos

Main Sighting: Loads of fieldfares
Huge flock of fieldfares in Penrhos orchards near Llantilio Crossenny. I spent a few hours trying to get an estimate of numbers. Minimum of 5000, could be many more. Quite a spectacle. Attracting attention from a few raptors including peregrine.
