Sugar Loaf

Main Sighting: Wheatear
Nice walk up the Sugar Loaf today although windy on the top. 3 Wheatear in the lee of the top. Single Peregrine and Kestrel. A few Meadow Pipits about and 5 Mistle Thrush feeding on the Rowan berries - all the Rowan trees heavy with berries ready for the winter thrushes

Goldcliff Lagoons

Main Sighting: Whimbrel
Highlights this afternoon included 13 grey plover from hide 2 (2 more flying past sea wall), 12 greenshanks (one group of 6 feeding together the remainder elsewhere on the lagoons), 6 little egrets, 134 ringed plovers with 160 dunlin, 1 male ruff and 3 reeves, 65 meadow pipits over the field, 66 redshanks, 3 spotted redshanks, 30 snipe, 5 black tailed godwits, female wheatear adjacent to hide 3 with a male stonechat, 1 curlew sandpiper with the lapwing (new platform), 2 white wagtails, 1 stock dove, 1 chiffchaff and a nice surprise was a late whimbrel dropping in briefly from hide 1.

Goldcliff Lagoons

Main Sighting: Little Stint
Further update - The hen harrier made another appearance at 1535hrs as did an adult little stint seen again at 1740hrs. Also of note, teal numbers up to 149, 76 lapwing, common snipe numbers up to 33, 7 greenshanks, ruff numbers included 2 males and 6 reeves, 6 dunlin, 18 shoveler, 3 spotted redshanks, 2 avocets (adult and juv), 2 female wigeon (my first of the autumn), 2 black tailed godwits, 6 redshanks, female peregrine, 2 yellow wagtails calling, 11 house martins migrating, 2, chiffchaffs and 2 female wheatears in the grass area adjacent o hide 3. Other: numerous common darters, 3 red admirals and 1 painted lady butterflies, 2 grass snakes and a fox in the right hand corner from hide 1 patrolling the fence line.

Newport Wetlands

Main Sighting: Bittern
Around midday bittern seen flying over reedbeds from power station end towards hide. Looked as if it was going to drop down into reedbed in front of hide but got mobbed and flew high over copse.

Oxbow the Bryn

Swallows, sand and house martins. Pairs of buzzards and red kite, 60 canada geese, moorhen, 4 goosander, remains of little egret [possible mink kill], little egret[the remaining partner] mute swan and 4 signets.
