Main sighting: Common Gull

Goldcrest contact call, 2 reed buntings, pair of stonechats, female sparrowhawk and greylag geese. Hide one – 5 shoveler, 1 shelduck and approx 150 starlings flying past. Hide three – 1 common gull past. 9 species of birds huddled up along the bank including 28 shoveler, 10 teal, 4 gadwall, mallards, 63 wigeon, 4 cormorants, 1 dunlin, 1 common redshank and a Canada goose. Mute swan cygnet dead in the grass opposite the hide. Unusual first sighting for me of the redshank walking over the back of a roosting female mallard to get to the front.

Male and female goosander on the river between 8 and 9am.

Also lots of robins, goldfinches, chaffinches, wood pigeons and magpies along the banks with grey wagtails and dippers in the shallows.

Jack Snipe between Black Rock and St. Pierre Pill plus 75 Wigeon and 10 Curlew.

NEDERN: Pintail 33, Shoveler 13, Teal 123, Wigeon 119, Mallard 20, Coot 9, Lapwing 17, Redshank 9, Little Egret 2, Grey Heron 2, Little Grebe 1, Black-headed Gull 300+.

Main sighting: Dunlin

1030 – 1230 hrs walk from Saltmarsh lane to lighthouse – bullfinches, 250 + wigeon on tideline, 200 shelduck, 80 curlew, 6 grey plover, several flocks of dunlin, largest at 600 heading to Goldcliff at 1100 hrs total @ 1500, 8 oystercatchers, one pair stonechat, 4 cettis calling, single lapwing, reedbeds very quiet.

Mitchel Troy churchyard

Main sighting: Finch bonanza

A flock of at least 10 hawfinch in the churchyard at Mitchel Troy this morning. Very mobile, zooming in and out of yews, but a flock of 6 seen well in the tops of some alders along the Trothy. Also, and perhaps even more surprising, was a flock of at least 10 greenfinch. Finally, a flock of c. 25 siskin, again feeding in the alders and also around the conifers.

Great close up view of Kestrel on wires just outside entrance to Lagoons from road
Large number of Shovelers on wetlands at entrance from road to Red Barn hide
Also large no of Lapwings
In brambles in front of car there were 4 chiffchaff
In fields near turn to Uskmouth there were 3 Little Egret
At Newport wetlands from Cafe an overflying
Raven was seen along with on the feeders a Jay, Gt Spotted Woodpecker and a mixed flock of 30 Goldfinch and Greenfinch
